Dr. Sherwood Burns-Nader
Dr. Sherwood Burns-Nader is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and serves as coordinator of the child life programs. Dr. Burns-Nader's area of expertise is in child development and child life. Dr. Burns-Nader is a Certified Child Life Specialist and has held her certification from the Association for Child Life Professionals for 15+ years. Dr. Burns-Nader's specific research interests include examining the psychosocial issues affecting children and families in the medical setting, the benefits of child life interventions during medical procedures, the value of play in development and coping in children, and the experience of child life students and professionals. She has co-authored papers in such journals as Burns, Pain Medicine, Children's Health Care, Clinical Pediatrics, Journal of Child Life, and Journal of Child Health Care. Dr. Burns-Nader teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in child life. Dr. Burns-Nader has served in leadership roles within the Association of Child Life Professionals and the Southeastern Association of Child Life Professionals, including Chair of the Child Life Certification Commission and Chair of SEACLP. Dr. Burns-Nader is actively involved in the Child Life Academic Society and is part of its founders council. Dr. Burns-Nader was selected in the inaugural class of the ACLP's Research Fellows and currently serves as the Lead Fellow.
Currently, Dr. Burns-Nader is examining the experiences of child life specialists and students and the benefits of facility dogs for pediatric programs.
